Q: How do I install the
modem?
A: Your computer should
detect when you connect your modem to it, and then automatically begin the
installation from the CD-ROM. The process is designed to be straightforward and
should only require confirmation of the default settings. If the modem is not
recognised by the computer, or fails to register, select Run in the Windows
Start menu and type D:\setup.exe (where D: is the letter for your CD-ROM drive).
Click OK to begin installation from the CD.
Q: Do I have to install the modem drivers before I connect the modem to my
computer?
A: Connecting the modem to
your computer kick-starts the modem installation process (including the modem
driver installation). Full details are provided in the Installation Guide and
CD-ROM you receive with your Broadband Welcome Pack from your ISP. If you
purchase a modem from elsewhere, there should also be installation instructions
provided.
Q: Can I install my broadband modem before my Broadband service is activated?
A: Yes, plugging in
microfilters and installing the broadband modem drivers onto your computer will
not affect your Broadband service once it's activated.
Q: Does it matter if my Broadband service is activated before I have plugged
microfilters into my telephone sockets?
A: No, it doesn't matter.
However, once you do connect, you'll need to ensure the microfilters are plugged
into all phone sockets used by a telephone or other equipment (e.g. fax, digibox)
that share the same line as your broadband modem. Otherwise, you may experience
noise on the line when you make or receive a telephone call (you may also
experience connection problems).
Q: Does it matter where in the house I connect to Broadband?
A: No. you can connect your
modem wherever you have a telephone socket on the enabled line. The Broadband
modem is normally supplied with a 3m line cord: other modem/router line cords
may vary.
Q: My
line cord isn't long enough - what should I do?
A: The best solution would
be to have an additional socket fitted nearer your computer. If this is
impractical, you can buy a line extension cord, although this may degrade the
quality of signal, causing your connection to slow. You should connect the
extension between the wall socket and the microfilter.
Q: During installation I get a Windows warning that the software is not
Microsoft-certified. What does this mean?
A: ISP test this software
for compatibility on all Windows Operating Systems that are supported. This is a
standard Windows warning and you can disregard it. The software has not been
designed to harm your system.
Q: Why might I need my Windows Operating system (OS) CD?
A: Certain Windows OS files
may not have been installed previously, as they weren't needed. If this is the
case, you will be prompted to insert your Windows CD. Windows will then
automatically download the files. Once they're downloaded, remove the Windows CD
and reinsert the modem installation CD. Installation will continue from where it
left off.
Q: Can I connect other USB devices (e.g. printer, scanner, digital camera) to my
computer while I'm using a broadband modem?
A: Yes, you can. However,
you will need to connect the other devices before you connect the broadband
modem. If you connect the modem before your other devices, you will see an error
message warning you that the USB bandwidth is exceeded and the additional USB
device may not function properly. If your broadband modem is already connected,
unplug it, plug in the other USB device(s) and reconnect your modem.
Q: My computer only has one USB port. How can I connect more than one USB
device?
A: You'll need a USB hub -
readily available from high street stores. Connect the hub to your computer,
then plug the devices into the hub.
Q: The motherboard on my computer supports USB but my computer has no USB
socket. What can I do?
A: The necessary parts can
be easily fitted by a local retailer. Alternatively, you can install a PCI-USB
converter card in any spare PCI slot in your computer. These can be purchased
from computer retailers.
